As a truck driver it’s your job to be on the road. Many times, you don’t have a choice on which routes you must take. Unfortunately, many of them are fraught with tricks and not treats. Road hazards, such as potholes, uneven pavement, cracks, and debris can turn a relatively easy drive into an obstacle course.
Wouldn’t it be nice to know what to expect ahead of time? Here is a list of routes within California that are notorious for having an impact on your travel. Take heed and keep your eyes out for danger wherever it lurks
Interstate 5
The I-5 pretty much runs the entire state of California from its southern border to its northern. If you are traveling from one end to another, fatigue can become a problem. The lack of scenery and constant traffic for long hours can be draining, especially if you cannot afford extensive breaks. Possibly its most notorious section is commonly referred to as “the Grapevine.” This section of the I-5 crosses through Central California Valley and can be one of the windiest, weather impacted drives.
Interstate 10
The I-10 is not only the most dangerous route in California, but it also is considered one of the most dangerous in the United States. This route dissects California from the coast to the boarder with Arizona. Poor road conditions and distracted drivers are the main cause of accidents and present a constant problem for truck drivers.
Interstate 15
The I-15 runs from San Diego County into Las Vegas and extends to the Canadian border. With LA and Vegas being two of the top tourist destinations this route can get extremely busy with drivers regularly exceeding the speed limit and trying to reach their destination as quickly as possible. And those leaving Las Vegas heading back to California can be easily distracted, tired, and possibly under the influence.
State Road 138
State Road 138 crossed Los Angeles County and San Bernardino County. Due to its many twists and turns, it can be particularly dangerous for truck drivers who transport heavy loads, even at recommended speeds. While deadlines can affect speeds and travel times, it is important to reach your location safe and secure. So, keep in mind and allow for time when taking 138.
Interstate 405
The I-405 runs along the south and west borders of Los Angeles and is widely considered to be the most congested highway in the entire country. To make matters worse, it also runs near three major airports. Those from out of town are less familiar with the exits and might make dangerous last-minute maneuvers, resulting in several accidents in addition to those caused by distracted drivers.
Interstate 605
Possibly one of the most dangerous routes for truck drivers is the I-605. This is a vital artery for many commuters, but since this feeds into the Port of Los Angeles and most freeways it is packed with truckers in both directions. The combination of dense traffic and drivers quickly and without warning changing lanes at various speeds the risk factors increase. Vigilance and patience are key to preventing accidents and unexpected dangers that may await.
US 101
The US 101 is a major route that carves through the heart of California. While it offers scenic views it also has proven perilous and has regularly placed it as one of the top 5 roadways for fatalities in the United States. Exercise caution when taking this route.
