Counting Down Labor Day: Make Sure You are Prepared

August always seems like a transitional month. Temperatures seem to rise as summer draws to a close and back-to-school specials start showing up. But there is one holiday looming on the horizon that will affect transportation and especially the freight and truck industry.

This year, the first Monday of September (September 1, 2025)  is Labor Day, a national holiday dedicated to celebrating this nation’s working class. Labor Day traditionally affects trucking by decreasing the number of drivers on the road, which can increase shipping costs and cause temporary delays in the supply chain as freight movement catches up. The holiday also presents safety challenges due to increased traffic and the potential for distracted or impatient drivers, requiring both truckers and other motorists to be extra vigilant.

Here are some of the concerns you should be prepared for and keep an eye on:

Increased Traffic and Congestion

Labor Day weekend sees a significant increase in vehicles on the road, creating congestion, and longer travel times. Make sure to plan ahead, checking routes, and alternatives to avoid peak traffic congestion .

Distracted Driver Behavior

Holiday travelers may be unfamiliar with routes or driving while distracted or fatigued, which can lead to unpredictable behavior and higher accident potential. Stay vigilant and check your blind spots to avoid incidents

Oversize Load Restrictions:

Many states have holiday travel restrictions for oversize/overweight (OS/OW) loads requiring special permits, which can be difficult to obtain or may even be banned over the holiday weekend.

Vehicle Inspection and Preventive Maintenance

Make sure you check your engine oils, transmission fluids, brakes, tires, etc. to make sure you are prepared before heading on the road.
